No trip to New York City is complete without walk theHigh air . At least not for a plant geek and nature lover . I must say , I was n’t really looking forth to visiting New York at first – the big urban center is generally not for me and I ’d unremarkably rather journey somewhere rural and still . But New York City turned out to win my heart because of urban green projects like this one . The High Line is a green space created along the 1.45 - mile - long out - of - employment railway system on the west side of Manhattan . It was designed to reference the ego - seed landscape that grew where rail cars no longer move around .

While it looks effortless and wild , the plantings have been meticulously chosen for   validity and sustainability . The mixing of grasses , perennials , shrubs , and tree prove a textural and color variation that changes throughout the seasons .

I have looked at many photo of the High Line and did not see any that looked even remotely like what it looked like in belated September when the early fall flowers were explode exposed and most of everything else had gone to seed .

Vivienne Gucwa ofNY Through the Lenswas my spell template for the day . Vivienne is a world - renowned photographer who lives in Manhattan and views the city as no one else does . She had the chance to photograph the final subdivision of the High Line to be make grow before its transmutation . She attractively captured the untouched railroad line tracks as you’re able to seehere .

The railroad is now completely developed with plants and art , with a backdrop of both honest-to-goodness and raw buildings , some of which you may recognize .

The High Line is a natural and sustainable   space that offsets the concrete jungle that dominates Manhattan . It functions as a green roof that ply habitat and food for urban wildlife .

Birdsandbeescould be catch enjoying the quad ,

as could a crowd of other critter like these bug . Update : it ’s always fun to discover novel insects and thank you to everyone who help me to identify these as milkweed hemipteran . They expect very similar to boxelder bugs , but since these are on flower pods , my adept guesswork is milkweed germ .

The pathways recycle water by admit it to drain into conterminous planting beds . I saw part of the garden being watered , but the native plants are established and I would guess they do n’t need much extra irrigation . Although there was a piddling splash fountain to cool off off .
