Over the last 6 months or so – it seems that we always have a remark or two to the web log on our canning cabinet that we built out of old cargo ships crates and pallets – to the point that after so many require – we finally put elaborate plans on how to build it on our Etsy store(see : give the axe Pantry plan ) .
So we thought for today ’s mail service we would go through the how 2 ’s of progress with palette and merchant marine crate – with a little supernumerary info on the canning larder .
It ’s a great task – with very little cost involved – and lets you store over 200 jar of tinned good ! Not to cite you’re able to use this awful looking cabinet to keep yoursmall kitchen appliance like wassailer oven , indoor grillwork , pots and goat god , etc . to make your kitchen more aesthetically pleasing .

We have in reality made two of them – the first we progress from pallet – the second from some old shipping crateful and pallets . But for both – the only tool we used were a Sawzall , Nail Gun , Construction Adhesive ( liquid nails arduous – duty ) , 3″ coarse wallboard screws and a drill with a Phillips # 2 screw bit ( for dry wall nooky )
For the canning closet , we jump by tearing apart about 4 pallets to apply for the sides and shelving board . We learned early on to not waste meter strain to draw the nail from plug-in and slay every little mite of everything . You cease up damaging path too many board and it takes eternally !
We apply a reciprocating byword with a prospicient destruction construction blade and simply slice up through the nail .

provide all of the remnant flat nails in the board , not only does it add up lots of persona – its exceedingly quick . If you site the pallet up on end you’re able to slice through all of the nails in about 15 mo .
Just echo the appendage until you have cut them all and you terminate up with 15 to 25 single boards to run with for every palette . ( depending on pallet size and make - up – you commonly get circuit card about 3 to 5″ wide by 30 to 48″ long ) . With shipping produce – we just disassemble the sides with the sawzall and then you have ready - made building panels to work with . Whatever you expend – pallets , shipping crates or former barn wood – the of import affair is to have unproblematic square boards to establish with .
Anytime we make anything with pallet – whether it ’s the canning closet or the sideboard hutch – we will then apply the left over 2 x 4 ’s that make up the palette ’s inside rails to build the carcase structure .

They are durable – and although heavy – they are liberal and make the structure stiff . Speaking of the structure – we always use vulgar wallboard gaoler and dense - duty construction adhesive material to tack together .
The screws hold tight and the adhesive material contain forever . Do n’t vex about anything other than the frame being straight .
Once again if there are some left over bits of nail that have been saw off smooth – permit it be – it just makes for a great patina when stained or painted over .

Once we have the structure carcass work up – we just simply use all of the straight boards cut from the pallet to cover . For this we will use the nail hit man for speed and looks – but you could just as well expend a mallet and nails .
Once you have trim it out to your liking – you’re able to paint , stain or pull up stakes natural – and you have a unique conversation piece .
The biggest piece of advice – do n’t perspire the contingent ! The biggest mistake people make when using rescued timber or pallet is trying to make it too complete .

It ’s far better to not attempt to sand everything super smooth – or take out every little crack or dent in the Mrs. Henry Wood . Let them be – it just makes it look that much better .
The real key is – whatever you build up – make it yours and have sport with it !
