This past two week were busy with hosting the National Primula Society home meeting , host two cocktail party , and having house guests , for both weekend from various plant life societies and supporter in the plant humanity , our last weekend involve a real delicacy , having Josef Halda from the Czech Republic for a house guest , as he passed through the Boston arena on a speaking tour of North America for the North American Rock Garden Society . Being as we are , we tried to put up Halda with as normal an experience as we can arrange , complete with duck eggs for breakfast , dogs jumping in his bed , and fresh foot strawberries . With nothing too fancy , I conceive he had as in force a metre as we did , both at his dialogue , and hiking in the woods .

We sort of knew that this would be an over-the-top weekend , but we never expected to have such fun , and to enjoy such troupe . This weekend actually start out last january , when our supporter and nurseryman , Harvey Wrightman , of Wrightman Alpines in Canada , call with the opportunity that Josef Halda might stay with us for a duet of days , while traveling through the US on a NARGS utterer tour . If you are unfamilar with Halda , here is a short bio I snipped from our past NARGs New England chairperson ’s script , written by Helen Herold .

“ In the way of many of his fellow Czech countrymen , Josef Halda travel to the mountains a very other age , first with his grandfather and immediately he was drawn to the wonderful flowers . Encouraged by his family , he bring some plate to grow in a garden . By the old age of 12 he had his own collection of plants in his parents ’ nursery . By age 16 , he was corresponding with Lawrence Crocker , a partner in Siskiyou Rare Plants in Medford , Oregon and subsequently sent them cuttings of Daphne arbuscula , a very unfearing evergreen Daphne which grows only on the limestone cliffs of the Muran Valley in Slovakia . This conduce to more correspondence with other growers in both Western Europe and North America . This is one of those remarkable occasions where gardening trumped politics , but , it would be another 20 years before Josef would travel to America .

He and his wife Jarmila have collect seed of new discovery in Turkey , the Caucasus , Central Asia , Siberia , West China and Upper Burma . Their Czech background has given then proficient access to remote region in nation of the former Soviet Union . Even now , traveling can be restrict at good , or bad , life-threatening . They have also researched and print monographs for Primula , Gentiana , Daphne , Paeonia and Androsace . The pic will portray both the plant we have never seen and the natural habitats which can scarce be described . From this vast region originate many of the audacious electric light originate in our gardens . There are many more that are yet uncultivated ; but may soon be here . ”

We did know that this would be a wonderful opportunity to be claim to another realm by one of the earthly concern ’s greatfield botanist and grower . And , we had been warned that anything could happen , as such things could when in the presence of genus . The unknown always is a morsel intimidating , A visit could become dispiritedly off course , lost in the formalness of cocktail party and book signings , and with such greatness as that which fall in the aura of Josef Halda , one sure enough could expect most anything , after all , here is a man who has slept for month in the high Himilayas , who has walk in the footsteps , quite literally of the worlds most infuencial botanic explorers from the 19th and 20th Centuries , such as Earnest . A.WIlson , Reginal Farrer and Frank Kingdon - Ward . What does one feed a guy who has lived for months off in High Burma eating the bulbs of Arisaema , boil bulbs of Nomocharis and raging bamboo shoots ? To make affair spoiled , when I asked what his favourite meat was , he responded with that although Red Panda and Tibeten Elk is effective , he really care Blue Pheasant from the Chinese Bamboo forests above 10,000 foot … .Surely this was not a Twinkies sort of guy cable . Simple , unostentatious seasonal delights were the safest ripe , roasted crybaby , fresh arugula from the garden , the first French Japanese radish of the year , nothing more needed . For gardeners like many of us who read this web log , we nod , for we are more about being real , and authentic experience rather than displays of impression . Still , I on the Q.T. fantasize about a selfish weekend alone with no schedule , client , no citizenry , perhaps even alone , in a cabin , in mid May , with nothing but the sound of Tanagers and the other morning spring chorus of transmigrate birds , for the flora and beast of May are rare and brief , and demand concentre reverence intimately appreciated alone .

Note : When traveling on expeditions for the National Museum in London and Key , explorers can seldom carry in 9 months deserving of food into the remote villages and eminent alpine areas of Burma , Tibet and China , so it is essential to be able to eat on what the villagers do ) .

Fresh back from a long expedition last twelvemonth in Burma , where he identified many Modern specie of Gentiana and other high alpines on which he was going to speak on , Saturday at Tower Hill Botanic Garden near Boston , Josef Halda was also our theatre Edgar Guest , and involve to live on two fiesty terriors , a parrot and a flock of ducks , as well as my cooking . Hopefully , this was run short to be an adventure for him , too . After arriving Thurday even , a day early , I was n’t quite sure what to expect , since we never have had the joy to see Halda before ( many refer to Josef by his last name , I do n’t know why ) , I suppose , like Mozart , it comes with greateness . And , expectant , he was , but more so , he quickly became a booster and instructor , perhaps a not so inciteful yet strategic move by our esteemed tour planner , who decide that he should stay with us for the weekend , the line of latitude between Halda ’s abode life and 60 minutes was so similar , that we spend two night laughing about how we both have African Gray Parrots , we both keep the testicle laying ducks sleep together as Indian Runners , we both kept honey bees , made Tilea tea and both have two dogs , we had the same television camera , the same piano background , and we both gather up a menagerie of plants , drift from Hoyas to Hosta , cacti to Alpines , a habit often scorn upon by purists . fundamentally , we connected on maby level , and it was simply , squeamish . A bit of playfulness was had by all , I think . Josepf was not only a very generous and decent man , but his intelligence was humbly cover deeply below his humor , his infective ebullience about many things .

Honestly , I was a bit apprehensive at first , for I had heard stories . “ Halda might just ‘ go quiet ’ on you , ” “ He might finger a petty uncomfortable and just decide not to blab out , or even may seem shy , self-examining ” . People make me queasy too , but I was n’t trusted what I was in for . So I tried to imagine what I would feel like while on a one month duty tour of a country like the USA … .. sure enough , I would be stock , if not exhaustested , but , after a meal of joint crybaby and mashed white potato , he was eager to go on a hike in the Wood rather than sit and see Oprah . He said that this was on the button what he want to do . After meeting him at the caravan place , after introductions etc , he said … ” tomorow we see flowers , right ? ” “ And indeed , my plans to go tramp were confirmed far before I needed to worry about agendum , humor , or even a glass of wine….all that was need was a curious mind , a tired and over stimulated brain of a consumate plantsman , and 8 60 minutes on a ho-hum gear tride starring out at swamps of skunk lettuce , ( which he never stopped romancing about ! , white trillium grandiflorum ( which excited him from the window of the gear ride through New York state … . and a woodland sate with the leaping gush of new growth , the brilliant gem of orangish orioles , and the hope of ephemeron , migrating warblers and Erythronium americanum . Halda had one thing on his mind- a hike , the New England timber in mid May , is irrisistable , and we we ’re both in for a treat . He was prim for this salary increase . The timber in the Wachusett Mountain Reserve , in Princeton , Massachusetts , on a May weekend . I drive to work each day , on the same road , the same exits , the same highway and storage … .I pass three different Home Depots , five dissimilar Gas Stations of the Cross and nine dissimilar Dunkin Donuts . So the idea of take the air through a woodland is very appealing , especially one that is in peak growth , a unique trait of the deciduous forest like that found around where I subsist in Central Massachusetts , for here , the spring is inadequate , and intense . A mass of woodland wildflowers must come out , prime , pollinate and bear fruit before the canopy of foliage in the trees matures by the first week of June , so these three week in May , bring the most amazing plants into bloom , and the estimation that I could walk my favourite lead with on of the worlds most well-thought-of and influencial plant scientist , made this weekend sinful , even a gift .

I walked these woodwind often with a good champion , lead go through the clay , mosquito , avoid snakes and wasps , express mirth through drench warm spring deluge as well as blistering and humid August days when the timberland would dry to a crackleware in the summer oestrus , only relieve with an evening thundershower ; recently , I have not made meter to hike these woods , a DoS forest near me called Wachusett Mountain , a minuscule , if not tiny ski region near Boston , but also a spate ( New England sized J. J. Hill , actually ) with one of the last stay mature increase forests in Massachusetts , and also , with it;s modest elevation exchange , a varied and rich plant life . I make out of a colony of the Common Eastern Dogs Tooth Violet , Erythronium americanum , a sensationalistic ephemeron that has such a brusque bloom season , that I too have lose its salad days every year , for all it can take for these earlt emergers is one day of fondness , and a honey bee , and they can call it a twelvemonth . We found seed pods and spent bloom , but had to appreciate the dappled foliage of the plants , for of course , we were too late . Halda take a rare blot Salamander

Still , we were rewarded with some perfect exhibit , such as the Purple Trillium , Trillium erectum , and even many bod of the Painted Trillium , wake-robin undulatum , which excited Halda very much . It ’s funny how tangible works hoi polloi behave , when in the natural state . We hardly utter , instead , eyes darted onwards , and off the trail , seeking a bright split second of coloration which might have in mind a colony of wood sea anemone or comfortably yet , a clod of Mayflowers ( Epigea ) . of a sudden , one will yelp ” Look … .. look , oh my gosh , over here … .. ” ” No wait , look at this , OH WOW , unbelievble ” , and so our day pop off . All rather common discoveries , for these busy woods an hour west of Boston bore no new metal money or unundentified treasure , since these are some of the most botanized field of the world , we still came back with our Nikons full of images , and we were excited and whelmed with the joy of the mere Wood in May . Instead of being the famous plant Internet Explorer and the toy designer , we were both like new boy , ( but speaking in the common terminology of Latin , of track ) exploring a backyard woodlot for the next nerveless thing . I experienced a raw position of what I felt was common , if not a fresh appreciation for such everyday experiences as seeing a grove of Mountain Lauren , which I walk through often , suddenly become not just photo suitable but earned gasps of delight from one of the planets most well know botanists , how ca n’t that change ones view of the usual ! On this mothers day , Mom was of course , correct … .. Perspective is everything . A grove of matured Mountain Laurel ( Kalmia latifolia ) , along a lead in the Wachusett Mountain Reserve .

Even the moss and Lichens were beautiful in the spring cheerfulness , particularly throw that much of the upper canopy of these forests was miss due to a terrible and damaging ice rink storm this past December . Josef Halda photographing Arisaema triphyllum , our native Jack - in - the - Pulpit

Even the common is uncommon , this unidentified violet , a petite bloodless metal money which I may go collect the seeds of , was growing in the rock cranny on the north west lead of the mountain , it excite Halda very much , and now , I can see why . How could I miss these thing after stacks of rise past it ?

Our state wild flower , Epigaea repens , the Mayflower was a nice discovery since this is quite belated in the time of year , to be in bloom . It ’s fragrant , white waxy flower were found on only one dependency on the north side of the mountain . Our aboriginal pink ladyslipper , Cypripedium acaulis , remained subtle , mostly due to the fact that it is a few weeks too soon to find these acid fan in efflorescence . This one was perhaps the secretive to blossom . The bloodless Anemone quinquefolia , the Wood Anemone , a favorite of mine since it grow in the woods behind my home , was a previous find , but this fine settlement was found growing in the rootage scheme of a Beechnut tree . This one grouping had large flowers , intimately an inch in diam . Here we are at the end of Josef Halda ’s visit , with Mount Wachusett in the background , as seen from the terrace after his talk of the town at the Tower Hill Botanic Garden . From Here , Mr. Halda travels on for his last week in the US on the NARGS speakers tour , to the Berkshire Chapeter next week in Stockbridge Massachusetts , and then the Manhattan Chapter . We wish his safe travels , and hope to claver him presently .
