In a Vase on Monday. The Magic of Mimosa.
In the UK we are all still cringing after the wallop of a very frisky Storm Ciara . When we arrived here there were nine ripe birch rod Tree at the bottom of the garden . In 2015 there were seven .

Most years we lose one and after yesterday we are down to just four . It is a good thing I have a man with a chain saw . This is a rare sighting of the Pianist in the garden .

It is still windy and uncomfortable outside so a much nice lieu to be is in my far greenhouse with the endearing fragrance of mimosa .
But I ca n’t lurk in the glasshouse all solar day so I picked some to bring indoors . It does n’t last long in a vase but for a daytime or two it make full the way with a delicious bouquet which always reminds me of the mimosa forest of the south of France which is where the seed for this works came from . I know that in America mimosa is the name for the pink downlike balls ofAlbizzia julibrissenbut here we use it forAcacia . This one isAcacia dealbata .
Its coarse name is also ‘ Wattle ’ but I guess that sound more like an unsightly extremity to the neck opening . It is not faithfully hardy in the UK so I produce it in a large pot in the unwarmed nursery . It needs a slimly caustic compost .

AsAcacia dealbatacomes from Australia I have used some AustralianEucalyptus gunnito go with it in the vase .
To check the leave of the eucalypt I used some celadon - green tassels ofGarrya ellipticawhich are dancing in the wind right on now . If you require extra long satiny tassel you should seek out the form called ‘ James Roof ’ .
Garrya elliptica

It is tedious and inhuman outside but a vase of little golden orchis of mimosa bring some February magic into the home and the sweetened , warm , powdery perfume is intoxicating .
If you pop over to see Cathy atRambling in the Gardenyou will see her vase has a Japanese feel with flight of reddish plovers .

Those silver birch tree are shallow rooted , so I venture a loss of such grandiloquent tree in this nothingness although very sad , is not unusual . Your partnering of the grey green eucalyptus operate beautifully . My neighbours have mimosa growing very well outdoors but we must be ardent than you . James Roof is waiting in a pot , having only been purchase last week , so seeing your photograph has given me a unspoiled approximation what it will wait like in years to come .
Oh dear . so sorry about the birches . I really care the Garrya tassel , and they ’re perfect with the Mimosa blooms . Very prissy arrangement !
sad to read that one of your birch trees did n’t come through last weekend ’s tempest Chloris . I hope that your garden get away from any equipment casualty from this weekend ’s predicted hooley . I confide that your greenhouse is in a sheltered post for you to be seek sanctuary in there . The mimosa looks delightfully fuzzy . I would love to be capable to smell it .
