Peter asks about identify good coppicing tree diagram :
“ Are you mindful of any specific things to be search for in a Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree case that indicates it ’s suitableness for coppicing ?
I have been doing some enquiry into firewood tree diagram that can be coppiced and become my area . I ’m in a dry tropic surface area of northerly Australia . ( Oh no ! I give out my location ! J ) I think that the following may be suitable :

These are not indigene and have potential to become sess . That does n’t completely rule them out in my judgement but it is a consideration .
I have considered using a aboriginal Lilly Pilly ( Syzygium ) but ca n’t find any data on their suitableness for firewood and coppicing . Not for native varieties that is . In the absence of data based on trials and experience , can anything be find in descriptions of trees that indicate suitability for cropping ?
There ’s no urgency or importance on this . I ’m just concerned planting a couple of ( small ) trees in my yard to try it out .
Leucaena leucocephala
Thank you and God sanctify , ”
I will answer in pieces . I am not a coppicing expert but I have picked up some undecomposed ideas over the years .
“ Are you cognizant of any specific thing to be bet for in a tree character that indicate it ’s suitability for coppicing ? ”
Leucaena leucocephala
First of all , let ’s specify coppicing .
Midwest Permaculture hasa honest article on the issue , writing :
“ Coppicing a tree produces multiple stems uprise out of the main trunk — suited for firewood , fencing , tool handles , and many more woodland crafts . A by rights coppiced woodland , harvested in rotational sections called coup d’etat , has trees and understory in every stage and is a extremely in effect method to grow a fast supply of naturally regenerate timber . By working on a revolution we are assured of a craw somewhere in the woodland every year .
Pollarding ( from the word “ poll , ” which originally meant “ top of head ” ) has been used since the Middle Ages — in fact , there are still stand of ceaselessly pollarded trees that date to that meter . Today , it is a proficiency that can be used in very urban environments to prevent Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree from invading utility or sewers . . . but its diachronic use of a wooded pasture arrangement also fits into a permaculture method very well — pile functions to get more take out of one country .
What wee-wee these methods so appealing is that by keeping the tree in a perpetual juvenile country , they actually expand the life of the tree by C or sometimes even thousands of year . Diseases seldom have time to take clutch of the untried maturation and conditions elements do not affect trees of brusk stature so they live much longer than their unpruned counterparts . ”
Basically , you are cutting a tree down to the ground at the right prison term of the class in gild to have it regrow and continually supply you with wood .
undecomposed coppicing species are those which do n’t shed blood too much sap , have the ability to regrow , and have value for feeding animals , using for tools or firewood , etc .
If a tree is a light deal , it ’s less valuable as a coppice tree diagram , unless you ’re just using it as a chop - and - drop , like I do with moringa trees .
A lot of the culture and praxis of coppicing has been recede over the years .

Leucaena leucocephala
“ I have been doing some research into firewood trees that can be coppiced and suit my region . I ’m in a dry tropics sphere of northern Australia . ( Oh no ! I give way off my location ! J ) ”
Research is good , as is experience .
As for “ give away your location , ” when you have roughly 100,000 the great unwashed following you online and have have threats related to your kinsperson , it ’s nice being off the map – or at least not easily found .
GliricidiaandLeucaenaare both awful for trim back and regrowing . I ’ve seen them done as pollard but I ’ll count coppicing bring well too . The regrowth rates are astonishing .
Leucaena leucocephala
Calliandrais an interesting choice . I had n’t thought about that one as a brush , but I do love them . I used to have a dwarf powderpuff tree in my one thousand which would immobilize and come back . I ’ll bet that sour quite well .
“ These are not natives and have potentiality to become dope . That does n’t wholly dominate them out in my thinker but it is a retainer . ”
Yes , unspoiled point . Unless they are already develop in your area , it ’s in all likelihood best not to bring in them . Leucaenain particular . Gliricidia , if disseminate all from the same tree diagram , purportedly will not set seed because it needs a pollinator . Not certain about that , though , but I do see a lot of non - seeding ones in neighborhoods .
“ I have considered using a native Lilly Pilly ( Syzygium ) but ca n’t regain any information on their suitability for firewood and coppicing . Not for aboriginal varieties that is . In the absence of information based on trials and experience , can anything be discover in description of tree that indicate suitability for cropping ?
There ’s no urgency or grandness on this . I ’m just concerned planting a couple of ( small ) trees in my yard to try it out . ”
I have n’t grow Lilly Pilly before , but it ’s not suppose to be a very big tree . It would likely take coppicing well , though , as its cousin the guava bush can be heavily turn off and regrow quickly .
you may fast - forward your experiment process by asking a few local tree diagram trimmers / tree surgeon , “ hey , what trees grow back like softheaded from the stumps when you cut them ? ”
That might put you on the right path . But experimenting with a assortment of tree diagram will be a lot of fun . Go – do it ! And describe back if you commend . I would love to hear how your experiments plough out .
