It derive in various forte listed by the figure of eld it is supposed to suppress weeds ( 3,7 , or 20 years ) . I do not like it for the intend manipulation ( it ends up being a nightmare in the garden ) , but it is affordable and works nicely for run up these bags .

Made from BPA - free polypropylene — the same charge card used to make yoghurt container — the non - woven fabric is very lightweight and breathable . Do fabric grow bags need drainage holes?

Grow bags do not need drain holes because they are holey and piss step by step ooze out . The downside is they do not retain wet as expeditiously as plastic mess .

I compared individual and treble - ply grow bags while test out various stitchery conception and a double - thickness is definitely better both for add strength and control moisture longer so I ’ve design the pattern ( below ) using two layers .

You may need to sit the bags on saucer if using them on a patio or balcony where you do n’t need any body of water dripping out . Or , bring spare material to the bottom of the bag before constitute . I do n’t discover this a problem unless I seriously over - body of water the dish .

crinkle allowancescan be ¼-inch or ½-inch . Just be reproducible , whatever you choose .

1Cut Fabric Pieces

trim back four piece of landscape painting fabric all the same size .

Four layers of fabric and seam A.

4Turn and Align Seam A and B

Now we are go to splay everything a quarter turn so that SEAM A is in the midway and SEAM B is directly below it underneath .

Line up seams and secure in billet with pins .

It ’s fine to either digit conjure the bed allowances unresolved or to one side : it will turn out exquisitely either way .

Line showing overlap of seams A and B.

With SEAM A and B lined up , pin all 4 layers together and sew together a seam valuation account across bottom of bag .

Remove pins .

5Move SEAM A and SEAM B to Sides

Now we are going to move SEAM A back to the left side and SEAM B to the proper side .

I do it by swipe SEAM A on top and SEAM B underneath and shifting everything a after part twist replication clockwise .

In other run-in , move SEAM A to the left side and SEAM B to the proper side ( how you had it previously). The next diagram show the emplacement .

6Mark and Sew Two New Bottom Seams

After put SEAM A and SEAM B back to either side , the bottom will look something like the next diagram .

The points marked C1 and C2 should be placed incisively half room between SEAM A and SEAM B. Temporarily pin C1 in station . It may or may not be near the top of the bag : this diverge depending on bag property .

See the other four circuit in the diagram ?

Sew lines for bottom of round bag.

If you desire a orotund bag , your stitch lines for BOTTOM E and BOTTOM F will start and end at the halfway points .

evaluate each of those edges and cross out the in-between ( halfway ) points .

tie your sewing lines ( BOTTOM Es and BOTTOM F ) on the fabric , remove the C1 pin tumbler , and stitch along those lines .

Bottom of bag.

I mentioned that round bags made from squares of framework work better than rectangular , but in casing you still want to try it , this is how it ’s done .

rather of marking your stitching channel for BOTTOM tocopherol and BOTTOM F at the halfway head of each edge , clean a spot closer to C1 and C2 and be sure both crease are the same distance from those point . sew together both seams .

As cite , the orthogonal old bag do n’t keep their shape the way circular ones do . You may not mind this : or you may need to enter composition board along the bound to well delineate the shape . If unsure , just make circular ones .

Rectangular grow bag.

7Turn Grow Bag Right Side Out

flex your bag right side out so that the seams are on the interior .

You probably noticed that the Step 6 stitching created two triangle of fabric in the bottom . Do not cut them off . They will assist reinforce the base of the bag and keep on moisture .

8Finish Top of Grow Bag

To finish the top of the old bag , pin and sew together the two layers of framework together , all the style around the top .

Then , fold up the top down ( like the cuff of a sock ) and stitch in place as desired . How much you close down over is up to you : you may not care if there is any lip , or you may like the spirit of an inch or two of fabric folded over .

9Add Handles (Optional)

handgrip are optional and much more for aesthetics than function since you may just pluck up the grow bag without them .

I care bring hold on the medium and large bags or for hang the small-scale bags on a wall or fencing .

They would seem silly on the small one and probably could n’t hold the weight of the extra - big dish when they are fill with plant and moisten potting mix , and might even charge . But do as you please .

Sewing diagram for handles on grow bag.

If your webbing has unfinished ends , hem them first .

You will tailor-make ( top stitch ) the handles on the outside of the grip .

One option is to place one handle at SEAM A and another at SEAM B.

Using the seam as the halfway full stop , pin your webbing in two places , equal distance from the seam and the same distance from top of bag .

In the photo ( above ) , I ’ve get a medium - size originate bag with an 18 - column inch piece of webbing for the handle . The two conclusion are placed 3 - column inch aside ( each 1.5 inches from the seam ) . Four inch of each end of webbing is sewn to the bag . This is echo on the other side with another 18 - column inch firearm of webbing .

Careful not to turn the handgrip when pinning it in place .

Garden Art Projects & Ideas book cover

To attach my webbing , I stitched a rectangle near the inner sharpness of the webbing and reenforce it with another line of sew together down the eye .

Larger grow bagswill be laboured and need surplus longsighted length of webbing with more of it attached to the bag to avoid tearing .

Depending on the bag size , you may want two or four handles with each piece of web approximately 26 - in long , space 5 or 6 inches apart from a furrow or mid - point , with at least 6 - in attached to the bag .
