Garrett Eckbo , midcentury Southern California ’s golden son of landscape painting computer architecture , was known for his then - radical mantra : “ Gardens are places in which people live out of door . ” That idea has , of form , spread throughout the earthly concern — yet one of the unspoiled illustration of that philosophy has been hidden from the world until just recently .

In 2010 , the Brody house in Holmby Hills , Los Angeles , came on the market for $ 24.95 million . For the first metre , images of the 11,511 - substantial - foot sign on 2.3 acres of landscape property were made public , hand people a glimpse into one of Eckbo ’s best — and one of few still intact — residential labor .
The house had been commissioned by art - disposed altruist Sidney and Frances Brody in 1949 . The Brodys turn to an all - mavin team of designer A. Quincy Jones and interior graphic designer William “ Billy ” Haines and take Eckbo himself a lover of the arts and greatly regulate by modern painting and sculpture — for the grounds .
But there would be no “ earth ” in this collaboration . The Brody mansion is a successful example of architect , national designer , and landscape designer work together toward a unique vision , and the landscape painting was no afterthought . It was spring up alongside the structure and the home spaces , blurring lines between outdoor and indoor living . In this shot of the courtyard hold up room / garden , slide glass doors seamlessly start the house to the outdoors and to internal courtyards . Eckbo ’s idea that “ design is the mental process which yield accomplished and convincing forms and relations in reply to human demands ” makes life here in an outdoor space as invite and direct — and as well-situated to maintain — as an interior room .
