It has been a while since Jeff Calton has shared his Kingsport , Tennessee , garden with us ( see some of his previous GPOD postshereandhere ) , but he ’s been enjoying a star bound in the garden and sent in some photos for us all to relish .

New leaves just begin to extend on the trees create a green haze , with the democratic double - flowered cherryPrunusserrulata‘Kanzan ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) place on its over - the - top pinkish show in the middle .

Ajugareptans‘Chocolate Chip ’ ( zone 4–9 ) makes a carpet of obscure chocolate-brown - green foliage throughout the year , but in spring it tops it all off with abundant blue flowers . Beyond it you could see the garden just beginning to awaken up .

There is nothing like dependable sure-enough - fashioned bearded iris ( Irisgermanica , Zones 3–9 ) . Newer iris diaphragm hybrids gas in an elaborate way strut petals and color , but previous varieties like this have a dim-witted elegance and always seem to be the most vigorous ; they are often fragrant as well .
