A traditional Zen garden gets a tropical twist by a Kiwi with passion for Japanese philosophies in Australia
Hi GPODers !
Garden Photo of the Dayis ground in the U.S. , but we fain go for submission from gardeners all over the world . Of of course , the absolute majority of our submission come from North America and the Northern Hemisphere , but we will on occasion have submission from international gardens and sometimes get to see what gardener in the Southern Hemisphere are experience . Just last week I shared Gabrielle ’s lush gardens in New South Wales ( check outGabrielle ’s Garden in New South Wales , if you lose it ) , so I was surprised and delighted to have another garden from Down Under to share this calendar week . Today we ’re lead up the easterly coast , to Queensland , Australia , and exploring the beautiful garden Dawn Mitchell created based on Japanese garden figure .
An avid interest in Japanese philosophies , combined with a love life of rude landscape painting lead me to the challenge of create a Japanese Zen garden , albeit survive in a tropical climate .

Aware of deep - root incongruousness in Japanese acculturation and seek to stay put true to the art of reduction , a trope within its tradition , was an essential principle and integral to the design of land - differentiate this conception , into a fond one - season climate . Some might say that a Kiwi in Queensland attempting such a task could be escort as brave or imprudent .
Because nature is meant to be respected and seen as a stunner that lets us live on within it , a Nipponese garden is created to have this pass .
pull strings constitutional dimension of the object in a Japanese garden to enhance the naturalness and to achieve an art - nature hybrid that testified to its innate overall look , was what I strive for . pose emblematic tilt and gravel , perfecting the phone of water stream from the bamboo spout , manipulating the growth design of plant , and redefining the autumnal vividness of the foliage , was enduring and gratifying . finally , it germinate and flourished with help from my husband , advertise an overloaded lawn cart never - terminate klick , and my apologies to the ticker installer who had to endure my OCD disposition . One year on , I experience wabi - sabi ; the imperfectness and banker’s acceptance of brevity through nature ’s crystalline lens , of what used to be a nondescript patch of backyard pasture , now a cloistered piece of Zen paradise .

Dawn Mitchell
A all-important aspect of Japanese garden design is nuance and simplicity , which is related to the idea of “ reducing ” that Dawn mentions above . To emphasise the beauty of realistic landscapes and to allow each component of the garden enough space to shine , control must be practiced so as to respect the value of these resources while reducing waste . While some garden trend encourage maximalism , Japanese design underscore the old adage that “ less is more , ” and Dawn executes that utterly .
Zen garden , also known as the Nipponese dry garden or rock-and-roll garden , are craft to make stylized miniature landscape . cautiously placed rocks and plant life symbolize mass and green hills , while well - maintained trees and shrubs mimic their much - large relatives in the wild . These miniature landscapes also teach us an important deterrent example about saving as Zen garden are usually meant to be treaded on minimally , more of a space for reflection than interaction . This reminds us how precious our environs is , and that we should strive to maintain and uphold the beauty of nature .

While this aim trend is undoubtably distinguishable , some principles are found in every successful garden . Plant spacing and size can drastically change how your center travels through the space and can give the illusion that your garden is larger or smaller than it really is . Though this view is a unretentive distance from one side of the garden to the other , wide-ranging heights and grain create a great amount of depth that draws the eye into the detail on the opposite remnant .
And the humble contingent oblige just as much grandness as the big one ! While the great bamboo plant see in many of the exposure above is understandably a focal point and stopper , red is also playing a all important role in Dawn ’s pattern . What looks to be a carpet of‘Red Threads ’ alternanthera(Alternanthera ficoidea‘Red Threads ’ , Zones 10–12 ) is a beautiful papa of color and contrast to all of the greens and grays in the garden .
While rock lanterns are n’t a necessary , a couple well - station in the garden certainly wo n’t bruise ! I particularly like that Dawn selected very different lantern that all superintend to work together .

Thank you so much for this tour through your tropical Zen garden , Dawn ! I can think of a space more inspirational for those that suppose their dreaming garden is outside what their place or locating allow . With a little creativity and Lot of consideration to implant option , just about any garden style is possible .
