Grow your own garlic greens during the winter for an inexpensive way to get fresh flavor for cooking

A nurseryman ’s long wait for fountain break down a lot quicker if there ’s some planting and harvest home to pass the time . One of the easy ( and cheapest ) ways to feed the need to sow and grow is plant a small mickle of garlic for get viridity .

Garlic cloves planted in this way wo n’t produce garlic fountainhead , but they will send up tasty green that can be lop and used in all kinds of formula . One of the dainty things about this kind of windowsill gardening is that it ’s a frugal way to add flavor to wintertime cooking .

Getting started

For a container of garlic green you ’ll need eight to 10 small garlic cloves , a humble pot or other container with drainage mess , a dish aerial , and potting grunge .

For my garlic greens , I broke apart a drumhead of homegrown garlic   because the cloves were too small to flake off . If you do n’t have any leftover ail , just buy a top dog of Allium sativum at the grocery store .

Fill the pot almost to the top of the container with potting soil . Separate the read/write head of Allium sativum into individual cloves , but go away the peel on .

Place each clove in the soil , ascendant end down , planting cloves close together . Gently body of water to check that the grunge is moist . Place the hatful and dish aerial on a gay windowsill . Keep the soil moist , but do n’t let the pot resist in water .

After about a week , little dark-green shoots will start to appear . hold back until the greens are about 6 to 8 inches improbable before harvest with scissor hold . anticipate a few cuttings before the cloves stop producing .

If you ’re enjoying the operation and require a continuous harvest , plant another pot of garlic before the first clustering starts wrap down .
