Happy natal day , boys !
January is a particular month down on the farm . It ’s when we celebrate the birthdays of my twoSpanish Mustangs , Rio and Milagro .

Rio and Milagro were born seven years aside , but their birthdays are only a week away from each other . Rio was accept in East Texas , while Milagro in Southern California . They had very dissimilar beginnings .
Rio was support at Dryad Hill Farm , the product of a breeding political platform designed to produce spotted Spanish Mustangs . His breeder intend to keep him as a stallion and expend him in her breeding program until she became a mummy herself and pull in she had to cut back on her cavalry business ..
So , Rio start up for sales event at about 1 twelvemonth onetime . His advertizement was on the Internet for many months , and I had slobber over his flick many times . He was the patched Spanish Mustang I had long been dream of . But an extra Equus caballus did n’t seem to be in the characterization for me . Then , nearly a twelvemonth later on , I came into a little bit of money and decided to go for it . Rio was still available , and I bought him sight unseen and had him shipped out to me three calendar week before Christmas , 2009 ..

Two years earlier , in December 2007 , Milagro came to me as a 5 - year - erstwhile . He was bear to a small-scale breeder only 40 geographical mile out from me . He was the third Cartesian product of the same stallion and mare breeding but , unlike his two older sib , Milagro was not a healthy foal . Shortly after birth , he develop acerbity foal syndrome , a condition caused when the female parent produce antibodies against the foal ’s red blood cell case . The baby is bear normal , but becomes sick after assimilate the maria ’s Milk River . Most foals that contract this illness die , and he nearly did . After a tenacious menstruum of intensive tending , he miraculously rend through — and realize his name , Milagro , which means “ miracle ” in Spanish ..
After he was wean , Milagro went to my champion Kelly . She expose him to depend upon and kept him until I came along ..
Unlike many horse owner , I actually lie with the exact birthdates of my horses , and have pictures of them as babies . I know their double-dyed histories , and do n’t have to question what might have happened to them before they amount into my life . I ’m favorable like that .
In the past , I always find January to be a cheerless month . I would get a bad guinea pig of the post - holiday blue air . The fervour of Christmas had come and gone , and two and a one-half months of wintertime lay ahead ..
But now that I have my January boys , I see the first month of the yr differently . It ’s a time to be grateful for the beautiful horse cavalry in my life , and the wonderful urban farm where I live .
