When I left home , my Maryland zone 7 garden had slowed production hugely . With cool years and much cool night , not to cite less sunshine , warm - weather crop like tomatoes and Basil of Caesarea have almost stopped output . of late limit - out greens , cool - weather crops like gelt , chard , lettuces and brassicas are gayly putting out novel ontogeny . Although chiles are mature to red ink , there are still a lot of green ones on the vine , which take to ripen . If there is frost in the prognosis , the chiles , basil and any unripened love apple will necessitate to be harvest in a hurry . Sometimes , I pull up the whole chile plant , shake the soil from the roots and hang them in the shed until I can get to them . Same with the basil , only I snip off the root balls and impart flora into the business firm and hang it from the ceiling beams to dry out .
Here in the Ozarks , they are a few calendar week behind , so warm day are lingering and the garden are full of plant life in full efflorescence and maximum harvestable ontogenesis . Even though they had a drought here this summertime , with gamy temps of over 100 degrees F for weeks on end , the plants bounced back and are in their full autumnal glory . In the Kitchen Garden at the Ozark Folk Center , bounteous herbs demand to be pruned back and harvested , and seeds need to be gathered . Not only are the gardener harvest H.M.S. Bounty , they are getting ready for the forthcoming annual Herb Harvest Fall Festival , which is October 5 and 6 . ( Check out the schedule at www.ozarkfolkcenter.com . )

I arrive early to help get up for this event , which is kicked off with a Sumptuous Herbal Supper on Thursday , October 4 . Each yr , the HHFF has been featuring unlike arena around the globe and this year , we are highlighting the countries of North Africa . We will be showcasing the herbs and plants , food , crafts , customs , dancing and euphony of North Africa . Presenters Holly Shimizu , director of the U.S. Botanic Garden , and author and culinary herbalist , Pat Crocker from Ontario , Canada will be arriving this hebdomad . Meanwhile , there is a plenty of activity chance around the park – from hone the gardens , harvesting produce and herbs for the supper , the crafters are creating handmade point from tagines to astragal – and the Captain Cook at the Skillet Restaurant are design and cooking up a storm . I have been working in the kitchen with them creating menus , examination recipes , and flux up exotic portmanteau from herbs and spices .
I am fortunate to be a gardener , who is able to travel to these kind of educational events around the nation . And am looking forward to seeing all of the herbal friends who go from around the nation to celebrate herbs , plants and horticulture . From here , the next events will be two mitt - on workshops , which I will be doing with Centennial State - source Tina Marie Wilcox at the Memphis Botanic Garden on Friday , October , 26 ( www.memphisbotanicgarden.com ) .

Rosemary is happy in the Kitchen Garden at the Ozark Folk Center; it grows into a large shrub in the this zone 7 garden. It likes a Mediterranean mulch of stone. I will be using this to flavor my Root Vegetable and Chickpea Tagine. Click on other pix to enlarge and read captions.Photo/Illustration: Susan Belsinger
