I ’m write you from Berkeley , California .

I engraft pride of Madeira(Echium candicans , Zones 9–11 ) for their spring blooms . They erupt forth into tall blue spires in mid - March and last until May , providing an early but long - lasting statement in the garden . I situate it both in my hillside garden and in containers along my sidewalk airstrip .

I ’ve seen superbia of Madeira line online as curtly - hold up , but in my region it produce for ten . Some of my neighbors have pridefulness of Madeira with short pants as thick as my leg . I believe the secret is that our clime and terrain are very interchangeable to its native home ground on the island of Madeira . Like Madeira , we have teetotal summers , and I cater only circumscribed summer irrigation . I also live on on a rough remains hillside , which is ill - suit to English cottage flowers but perfect for Mediterranean flora from broken mountains .

Countless bees plenty to it for the fountain ambrosia . I spy European honeybees , aboriginal carpenter bee , and humblebee in the mix . I eff to sit in an Adirondack chairwoman and environ myself with their hum .

Each plant has a slightly different color , range from light blue to non-white purple . A few special plants have multicolor blossoms .

Earlier in the season , prime are just starting to flower on this plant ’s monumental anthesis . At their expectant , these spire can grow up to 20 in long .

As its name signal , pride of Madeira is native only to the Madeira island , an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean that belong to Portugal and is famous for its sensational landscape , vibrant cultivation , and unequalled plant life . Outside of it ’s incredible natural scenery , includingan ancient Arthur Stanley Jefferson Laurel forestthat is a UNESCO World Heritage land site , there are a multitude of unbelievable garden that gain Madeira many nicknames : the Garden Island , the Floating Garden , and Garden Isle .

Found on the rocky slopes of Madeira , this plant is drought liberal , salt tolerant , and deer repellent . As Adriana mentioned above , these characteristics are a great catch to the climate of Northern California , but this can also be a hurt . When not kept under controller , it can get out naturalize realm andencroach on aboriginal plant species . Keeping these flora away from open instinctive space and bump off flowers before seeds fledged is good practice for growing superbia of Madeira in California .

Adriana is keeping her plantings in check ; her bumpy fateful slope is utterly dotted with these bright spires of blooms . They await particularly lovely paired with the early flush of her pink anthesis cornel ( Cornusfloridaf.rubra , Zones 5–9 ) .

Here ’s another angle of the pride of Madeira scattered across Adriana ’s hillside garden , mingling well with her other plants and complementing all the other imperial and pink bloom in her spring landscape . She has done an incredible line of work make a garden with that riotous English bungalow spirit , but with plant that are better adapted for her bouldered clay conditions .

finally , Adriana included a video of these spectacular blooms glowing in the sunshine , the beautiful audio of birds cheep in the desktop .
