As I sit at my desk looking out my windowpane , I ’m just beginning to see signs the trees are about to begin their fall fireworks exhibit . We live in the country beleaguer by maple , oak , mellifluous gums and all kinds of tree diagram that simply illumine up the domain before shedding their Technicolor dreamcoat for the wintertime . So , let ’s take a moment to talk about some simple fall thing you should , or should not , be doing for your roses .
First let ’s turn back the deadheading . I wrote about this in a billet last fall but it does n’t smart to repeat it . Deadheading encourages raw blooming and unexampled outgrowth and we do n’t require that this meter of year . For more inside information please say my post from last year but I want to reiterate this .
Secondly , get in there and trim out numb wood – if you have any . Leaving it will just accentuate the industrial plant and is also a way for bug and all kinds of things to get into the rose . The rule about trimming spurring new outgrowth does n’t apply to dead wood so do n’t worry that . Just trim it off and if the bush needs more shaping that can be done later on – when you do your later winter prune .

Third , outside of dead wood do n’t cut anything else yet . I ’m sure you are like me and have some marvelous canes whip around . While there is the temptation to cut them down I ’d send word you restrain off a moment . waitress for a few surd freeze and then trim . At that breaker point the roses will be shut out down and doing some light trimming will not spur new ontogeny . Trimming those long cane back in former winter is a good thought because it will help prevent the wind instrument from snapping them off . Again , you will do the majority of the shaping later on during pruning , but after a few frosts experience free to clip down a bit .
Fourth , stop fertilizing ! ! ! I ca n’t say this loud enough . Fertilizing will push new ontogeny and for the reasons we ’ve lecture about we do n’t desire that pass off flop now . Let nature runs its course of instruction so the roses shut down for the winter on their own .
Irrigate . I know this seems odd but if you ’ve been have a ironic spell it wo n’t bruise to get some H2O to the rosiness mighty about now . We need them to enrol the winter as healthy as potential . Roses get through wintertime by living off stored amylum they developed during the growing time of year . If they are try from lack of water they ca n’t store up as much and this lessens their chance of getting through a long frigid wintertime . If you have soaker hoses those are always good , but if not attempt to get a hosiery on them and give them a couplet of gallons of water each .

Lastly gibe your mulch stage . If it is thin apply more . Mulch is great insulation for the root zona during inhuman night and making trusted you have a secure thick-skulled layer will help your roses come back should the tops die back .
That ’s it really . Nothing fancy and likely nothing you would n’t do for your other plants . But a little workplace now before Jack Frost add up nipping at your rose buds will really help your rosiness come forth into splendid show next spring .
Happy RoseingPaul
