If you ’ve been gardening for several seasons , you probably have your favorites : a core radical of trust varieties you grow year in and year out for their reliableness and their flavor . I , for example , always grow Chioggia beets and Sun Gold tomatoes . But if I rise only those , gardening — and dining — it would get boring . There is always room in my garden for something else , something weird , something I ’ve never tried before . That ’s why I look forward every fall to the reaching of the seed catalogs .

Well before the mailbox fills up with holiday cut-rate sale airman and cards , the come catalogue depart to trickle in . I do n’t have sentence to take a serious expression until after Thanksgiving , when the leave are off the lawn and the garden is put to bed . I ’m in the use of reading after supper , and the fresh seed catalogs , with their perfect photos and inspirational descriptions , are a goody to be savored , along with a loving cup of hot tea and a fire in the small woodstove .

For northern gardeners , wintertime is the dream season : no sens , bug , no blight , just visions of a perfect little vegetable eyepatch . And the catalogs are the wishing Holy Scripture . My current obsession isgoji(wolfberry ) , the late “ superfood ” from China . Do I really have way for another 10 - foot - tall bush ? Do I really want to pick even more berry ? These are the decision we make in the cold time of year , when the garden is a blank slate and everything seems possible .
